Have you noticed the Asian sensation on the news?

Maybe you haven’t, but I have.  Even though I don’t have an “I’m Asian” soapbox (OK, maybe I do, but it’s super flimsy!), it is nice to see Asian women not being portrayed as a trench girl, dragon lady or some other sexualized and/or  femme fatale figure.  Little Asian girls growing up today can aspire to be something outside the doctor-massage therapist-engineer-ho box.  Isn’t that nice!?

Growing up, the only things Asian I can remember are: Connie Chung, moo goo gai pan, my 4 cousins and a Cabbage Patch Kid doll that went to China.  She wasn’t Chinese, she just went there – her t-shirt said so.

Now, though, there’s something for everyone.  It’s not just blonde Barbie out there anymore.  There’s a teacher Barbie, Italian Barbie, doctor Barbie, Amazonia Barbie (it’s for real, I looked it up) … The Barbie I knew drove a red Corvette and had a pink toilet.  For real.

It only took 4 1/2 months or so, but it has arrived.  That is, our first-time homebuyer tax credit check!  It takes less time for a bald eagle to go from egg to feathered beaut.  In less time, we also could have birthed an emperor penguin or a litter of puppies.  Oh well.

As soon as we got the keys to our new home, dropped off a couple of boxes and got robbed (ahhh, the image of the footprint on my freakin’ pillow remains … at least now I can brush it off as a life experience! ha!), we amended our 2008 taxes to get the $8,000 credit.  From our mortgage lender, we heard the checks were arriving in the mail within 4-8 weeks.  And, at the time, that was probably true.   (Currently, the IRS Web site says: Keep in mind, however, that it is currently taking longer than normal — about 12 to 16 weeks — to process 2008 amended returns.)

By January, we started asking other people who we knew recently purchased a home and were eligible for the tax credit if they had received any good news.  No.  Well, any news at all?  Nada.  Zip.  So, we put on our Inspector Gadget hat and called.

IRS: We have you in our system, and I’m seeing that your account has been credited.  I’m not sure how long it will be before it’s completely processed, though.  Call back in two weeks.

Two weeks later, IRS: Check your mail this week.

And, there it was.  Huzzah!  So, keep your head up First-timers!!

Republican Senator-elect Scott Brown just joined the ranks of … creepy dad?!  If you didn’t hear his acceptance speech, check this bit.

Just what we need: A former actor/model/athlete-turned-lawyer all up in our political system.  Did I tell you my new passport arrived in the mail?  😉

Arnold Schwarzeneggar did it.  Kristina Keneally has, too.  That is, a foreign-born climbing the political rope.  Keneally, born in Vegas and raised in Toledo, Ohio, was recently appointed New South Wales’ Premier.  Cheers!
