You are currently browsing the category archive for the ‘Surfing’ category.

I do it.  You do it.  Your mom does it.  Your little brother does it.  Channel surf, that is.  It’s therapeutic and it gives the viewer a Cliff’s Notes of television shows.  There’s no thinking involved.  It’s easy.  (Unfortunately, it doesn’t burn calories.)

And now, there’s even channel surfing for blogs!  It’s a website that continuously changes the “channel” through newly updated blogs.

Check it out –

I received more than one email the other day telling me – APPLY FOR THIS JOB.  In an effort to save their billion dollar (18 billion to be exact) tourism industry, Australia is offering the “best job in the world” – island caretaker.  They had me at “island.”  Where’s my application?

The job pays 150,000 Australian dollars (105,000 US dollars) and includes free airfares from the winner’s home country to Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland‘s state government announced on Tuesday.

In return, the “island caretaker” will be expected to stroll the white sands, snorkel the reef, take care of “a few minor tasks” — and report to a global audience via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates.

The successful applicant, who will stay rent-free in a three-bedroom beach home complete with plunge pool and golf buggy, must be a good swimmer, excellent communicator and be able to speak and write English.

Perhaps we should throw it all (back) in the bag and head back Down Under.  With a three-bedroom pad, I’m sure someone will come visit us….right?!  Maybe.  What an awesome deal.

I urge everyone to apply 🙂  At the very least, put “visit Australia” on your to-do list.  Read the entire article on this incredible job here.

A bit morbid, sure, but it’s true – we’re all going to die someday.  And, I don’t think that lying in a wood box stuffed with embalming fluid is how I want to make my everlasting impression on the world.  But, get cremated and then what?  Sit on someone’s shelf?  Blow with the wind and into some bird’s trachea?  (Do birds have trachea?)  Well, I think I’ve found my answer – Eternal Reefs.  The Sundance channel showed a blurb on this company that creates a memorial (read: concrete reef ball – with your ashes mixed in) that is then used to build artificial reefs underwater.  Thus, helping rehabilitate our ocean’s ecosystem.  Pretty neat, I thought.

I had heard of artificial reefs while in Australia; they created one on the Gold Coast – Narrowneck.  The reef was created to heed off beach erosion and improve the surf break (hey, it’s Australia, surfing is just as important as beach erosion).  I’m not sure if it worked or not, but…A for effort.

Anywho, it’s always nice to know we have some options out there.

There’s nothing like living in Florida during Hurricane Season.  It’s unpredictable; exciting; hot and humid; dangerous.

And now, it’s official: the first hurricane of 2008, Bertha.  She started kicking and screaming a bit and quickly achieved Category 3 status.  Since then, while she’s continued on her path towards Bermuda, she’s been weakening.  And, Bertha is NOT predicted to make landfall in the U.S.  Perhaps, though, she’ll bring some waves to the surfers on the East Coast.

Whew!  Hopefully our wedding weekend will be hurricane-free, too!  Keep your fingers crossed….
