I finally made it over to Riverbend Park in Jupiter last weekend.  We set out on a full day of canoeing down the Loxahatchee that would drag our butts 8 miles or so (I think) and end us at Jonathan Dickinson State Park.  My shoulders started burning a little bit just typing that.  It was a full day.  (They quoted us that it’d be 6 to 7 hours of paddling, but we managed in about 4 to 4 1/2.)  But an awesome one, of course 🙂

It’s always great for me to get out, canoe/kayak/whatev, in South Florida because it reminds me that it’s not all strip malls, chain restaurants and highrise condo buildings.  Florida is also wildlife – we saw turtles, our friend Jodie almost hit a gator with her paddle, ospreys – and great scenery.

And, a river adventure is great for working on those relationship-building skills.  To kill or not to kill, that is the question!  Our mode of transportation (read: bad canoe that we shouldn’t have used, but did anyway) was challenging and we thought we were going to tip over every 60 seconds.  It didn’t help that the river was bending left and right like Chubby Checker, plus the fact that we had a cooler full of beverages in tow.  But we made it!

You know it’s summer when the 4-day weather forecast is: humid-hot-muggy-warm.  Ahhh, summer.  I felt the humidity just typing that.  I know I wrote that letter to Humidity awhile back (here it is), but…that was then.  This is now.  Anywho, summer means sun.  And a great place to catch some sun – Peanut Island.  It’s the teeniest little island sitting in the Intracoastal, close to the Port of Palm Beach, just north of the bridge on Northlake.  If you’re in Palm Beach County, this is a must-do!  Boaters, paddle boarders, kayakers, canoers…everybody that’s mobile via water is there!  Even the dogs!  Everybody is there to have a good time.  Makeshift volleyball nets are up.  Footballs are flying around.  Rays are swimming under your feet.  Burgers are being grilled.  Oh, you can’t forget the awesomeness of that crystal blue, clear water!  It’s a great reminder that we’re back in South Florida.  Good times, good times.

We popped over to Stuart’s own South River Outfitters this weekend.  We rented a double kayak and took it down the St. Lucie River.  Going down the river was like stepping back in time.  Just land, palms, marshes, gators, turtles.  It was nice and quiet, too; we only saw a few other kayakers/canoers on the river.  And, it’s so awesome that we can tote around our H2O-proof camera with us with no worries!
