The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It’s not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time. –John Steinbeck

From Roseburg, Oregon, we headed further south to reach the Redwood National Park. The drive there was amazing as it was through the Redwood Freeway part of Highway 101. Entering California was itself great! We stopped on the coast to stretch our legs and take in some awesome views of the Northern California coast.

Before long, we were driving through the Redwood National Park. We stopped at a visitors’ center and one of the rangers suggested the Elk Creek campground ($20 camp fee), which is in the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. (Within Redwood National Park there are a couple of state parks.) There were only a few small RVers there when we arrived, but by the end of the night, a handful more of campers settled in. Still, the camp site was quite and peaceful. We got a sweet spot by the creek and we made our first fire! Marshmellows and all…awww, yeah! Nothing beats a roasted marshmellow.

(yeah, that’s a Bud Light in my hand! Haha…they don’t sell in AU, so it was nostaligic to drink!)

We did a short hike that evening, and then another hike in the early morning. I was hoping to catch some elk on the move (we had seen some earlier that day), but no luck during the hikes. And, of course, the main attraction – the Redwoods! Seriously, incredible. You see them all along the highway as you’re driving, but you don’t realize how BIG they are. Then, you walk up to one, and it’s like, Daammmnn! They’re huge! And old! And amazing. The redwood trees (which are so named for their red inside bark-not their outside bark) make you feel small, but in a good way 😉
