Why “visit to the Q1” isn’t in my Fodor’s must see Australia book is a mystery. The Q1 is the 20th tallest building in the world right now; that’s taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and taller than the Chrysler Building in NYC. (Check out more 411 on the Q1 here.) Although it’s a “residential” building, there is an observation deck and bar that the general (paying) public can check out day or night.
On Friday night, for $10AUD, J and I made our way 77 stories in the air to arrive at a bougie-type bar complete with white boy spinning cds to create a lounge-housey sound, and black leather couches and chairs. Whether this is your thing or not, the Q1 was awesome. Since we went up at night, we could see the entire Gold Coast lit up. It was like looking down on at a miniature village that someone has spent way too much time building – complete with road signs and moving cars. During the day, supposedly, you’re able to see from Brisbane to Byron Bay.
