Day 1: New house, yaaay!
Day 2: New house got broken into, booo!
Seriously. Who cleaned the shitter out on our parade? Not a nice way to welcome us to the hood, Lake Worth. Ahh, but I don’t take it personally. Some people step in poo wearing Christian Louboutian shoes, some get their house broken into. Tomato, tomatoe.
And the Palm Beach Sheriff’s department has been lovely about the situation. The officer that responded was friendly and professional, and the next day JP received a follow-up phone call from the detective working the case – plus, she sent an email to introduce herself to me. Unexpected, but welcome.
At least we didn’t have a very smart thief – the damage could have been worse. Nonetheless, we are now sans computer, awesome underwater digi cam and a wedding band
What’s more, Mr. Hyde is super stressed (not to mention the other Mr.). New location. Burglary. Greeeeaat.
Tears for fears, though, no way! This weekend, I’m just going to sit and stare at our awesome pool, cypress wood (I think) ceilings, and wonder what color to repaint the ”purple room.”
Connecting water & electricity & gas: $402 (yes, a $402 deposit for Lake Worth residents!)
Gas lines turned on and checked: $150
Changing address on license: $25
Owning a home: PRICELESS

Fork in hand, we now have ourselves a piece of the pie – a home! Dig in! We are so excited, and there is so much to update … and it will come … soon. Moving, for lack of a better word, sucks. It makes me sweat and what’s worse, I realize I am a pack rat. Do I need to keep my high school yearbooks? What about the anniversary card JP gave me … 6 years ago? Well, now that I have a house to fill, it seems the answer must be a resounding YES, yes?!
I recently stopped by Fortune Cookie to pick up some foodstuffs. Oriental foodstuffs, that is – as if you didn’t figure that out already. I mean, come on, Fortune Cookie. You know they’re not selling gnocchi here. Cute-but-trite store names aside, I love going to this place. It’s your typical asian grocery store. The aisles are skinny and packed tight with more brands of soy sauce, mirin & rice wine than you could imagine being on one shelf. Noodles are in every shape and size, and made of rice, buckwheat flour, or tofu. And would you like those fresh, dry or frozen? Because they have it. And, instead of tomatoes and cucumbers in the veg section, there are fresh bunches of bok choy (bok choy, baby bok choy, Chinese bok choy…), huge daikon radishes, packages of brown & white beech mushrooms. Not hungry? Maybe you need a new dim sum steamer, or a pack of 50 chopsticks, or some sake.
On one of my recent trips to Fortune Cookie, I had the pleasure of meeting the owners.
“$13.99″ owner said.
So, I handed him my credit card. He swiped the card, read the front of it and quickly looked at me with an interesting grimace.
“Cara. Your name? That’s not very Asian,” owner said.
“Right. Ok. Well, that’s my name,” I replied with a smile. I didn’t want to jump into the I-was-adopted details at the moment. What did he expect? Ling? Sumiko? Yin?
“And, what’s your name?” I asked.
“David. And that’s my wife, Donna.”
Well, well…that’s not very Asian.
What a find this weekend! Don’t you love it when you find something cool that’s practically in your backyard!?
JP and I were going to check out Blowing Rocks Preserve, but when I called my brother – C1 – to see if he and the fam wanted to join, he suggested Coral Cove Park instead. Just south of Blowing Rocks (and north of the Jupiter Inlet), Coral Cove Park is a two-acre artificial reef and a great place to get our snorkel on! The reef started practically at the shoreline; ankle-deep and you’re already stepping on reef. The water clarity was pretty good, and the fish were everywhere. Parrot fish, puffer fish, sea urchins…the scenery was great!
Have I mentioned today how awesome our underwater camera is?! Check out the underwater video we got along with some other pics on our Flickr page
Thanks for the recommendation, C1!!
